EFHC is an accountable, efficient conduit for charitable funds supporting innovative educational programming including quality after school education enrichment activities and useful instructional services for Harris County classroom school teachers. It was established in 1994 as a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization in partnership with Harris County Department of Education.
Education Foundation mobilizes resources through foundation grants, corporate philanthropy and individual contributions to benefit classroom school teachers and their students in Harris County's 26 Independent School Districts. Recognizing that students influenced today will be fathers, mothers and grandparents of future generations, Education Foundation initiatives ensure that their progeny will be life-long learners, reliable employees, future business owners and employers and proud Texans.
Supporting after school educational enrichment opportunities and increasing access to quality after school programming in Harris County is an area of focus for Education Foundation. Houston Endowment has awarded grants since 2004 totaling over $3 million toward Education Foundation's After School Initiative. Foundations and corporations have assisted in providing significant continuing education initiatives for elementary, middle and high school classroom teachers in the fields of chemistry, earth and space sciences, physics and complex robotics. Music teachers have been funded to attend specialized training at Moores School of Music at the University of Houston.
Instructional services benefiting Harris County classroom teachers make learning exciting and knowledge more accessible for their students. Experiences with challenging real world technologies prepare students for the workplace of the future. Specialized training for science teachers, backed up actively with networking across school district lines is an initiative which Education Foundation is expanding in partnership with donors. Maintaining access to and supporting development of after school learning environments for Harris County school students is a long term commitment of Education Foundation.
Education Foundation includes a Community Advisory Board (CAB) to actively advise on strengthening quality after school educational enrichment activities in Harris County. As respected community members become knowledge partners with outstanding community professionals regarding county-wide activity and challenges to be met in the after school field, collaborative efforts critical for our collective futures emerge to be met.
EFHC’s access to a range of useful instructional services for teachers and innovative hands-on workshops specifically benefiting Harris County chemistry, engineering, earth and space sciences, physics, robotics and music teachers provides educators with tools and technologies that go beyond just using books to inform and educate “the faces of the future”. EFHC is stepping up focused activities in these key areas, maintaining low overhead and allocating monies wisely and strategically.
