"Excellence in Education" Banquet Honoring School Teachers - March 2010

The Education Foundation of Harris County creates opportunities for all children. More than one million children attend public school in Harris and nearby counties. The banquet is the community's opportunity to pay tribute to our region's public school teachers and present the Teacher of the Year Award.

Strengthening and supporting teachers is at the heart of the Foundation's vision. Teachers receiving benefits - in whose eyes the faces of the future in classrooms are holy vessels, holding within the destiny of our country - range from "Teach for America" youth to adults entering their fifth decade of service.

The Foundation, chartered as a 501 ©3 organization in1994, has developed into a thought leader for our region's independent school districts. In partnership with the Harris County Department of Education, private and public Foundations, philanthropists and corporate supporters, it creates, sustains and scales innovative initiatives benefiting school teachers and out-of-school-time educators who enable students to experience the "real world" applicability of classroom learning.

Our initiatives drive high demand, 21st-Century workplace skills into classrooms, accelerating learning in chemistry, applied physics, software programming and robotics. Students in Foundation-sponsored competitions also learn teamwork and marketing presentation skills, gain experience in applying what they know to solve problems for which they have been given no prior procedure and, in association with regional colleges and universities, reimagine their futures in relationship to higher education.

Leadership Houston presented its prestigious Science and Technology Award to the Education Foundation on June 24, 2009, in recognition of the educational competition known as the All Earth EcoBot Challenge (www.EcoBotchallenge.com), which recurs on April 17, 2010 at Reliant Center at Reliant Park.
